Candles for Endometriosis

August 1, 2018

Some of you may be aware that I suffer form endo (endometriosis). So this month I have decided to donate all profits form my Signature Candles to Endometriosis Australia.

Endometriosis is a common disease in which the tissue that is similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it in other parts of the body.

More than 700,000 (10%) of Australian women suffer with endometriosis at some point in their life with the disease often starting in teenagers. Symptoms are variable and this may contribute to the 7 to 10 year delay in diagnosis. Common symptoms include pelvic pain that puts life on hold around or during a woman’s period. It can damage fertility. Whilst endometriosis most often affects the reproductive organs it is frequently found in the bowel and bladder and has been found in muscle, joints, the lungs and the brain. In a Australian government report, endometriosis is reported to cost Australian society $7.7 billion annually with two thirds of these costs attributed to loss in productivity with the remainder, approximately $2.5 billion being direct healthcare cost -  https://www.endometriosisaustralia.org/

I won’t go into too much detail about my struggles however here is a quick overview of what I have gone through over the past 5 years.

I had emergency surgery due to a cyst rupturing plus 2 other surgeries to remove the endo (with a massive recovery time). I have also been in & out of specialist appointments & I am currently doing acupuncture to help with symptoms. This disease affects 1/10 women most of whom are in chronic pain. I am lucky & my pain is very moderate.

Just recently women have started to speak out about their struggles with the disease including some well-known faces (Whoopie Goldburg - Actor, Susan Sarandon - Actor, Zoe Marshall - Raido Personallity, Mel Grieg – Radio Personality, Penny McNamee – Actor Home & Away) & just this year the Government have passed a National Action Plan for research into endo. This is a major win for those 700,000 women suffering with the disease. Finally!!

I know that I am only a small business & may only get enough sales to donate a small amount, however I do believe that every little bit helps. So any orders made between now & the 31st of August will contribute to the donation.

Please feel free to share my story with your friends. Who knows you may have a friend that is suffering in silence & this is the story they need to come out of hiding to share their own story.
